Sitting in Relief Society a few Sundays ago, a sister raised her hand and quoted what she heard when a General Authority visited her stake conference. He said, in essence, that if you're waiting for the world to get better, stop. This is as good as it's going to get. It's only going to get worse from here.
This is what happens when Obama leaves office. JK! I'm not here to discuss politics, nor do I want to. ;)
In all seriousness, though, when she made this comment, I went through all the emotions! Anger, sadness, despair. I thought "No one is supposed to say that, especially not a GA! Things do get better! They're supposed to get better. I live my life keeping in mind that things do get better!" Could you imagine being told that life is never going to get better? You can only go down from here? That is definitely not what I needed to hear.
As my mind was racing a million miles an hour trying to process what I just heard, I realized something. I realized that everything I had been taught leading up to this point was true. I realized that the scriptures prophesying of the second coming were coming to pass. Our world will progressively get worse. I realized that what that General Authority said was true. This is as good as the world in which we live is going to be.
I realized something else. Just because the world will never get better doesn't mean I don't have to. "Be the good in the world." We are not destined to be sad. We are not destined to live in despair.
The world will not get any better, but I can be better. I can find the good around me. I can share that goodness with those around me. That is what Christ would do. "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
